Valve and Xi3 announce a Steam-Powered (not actual steam) PC.

Today Valve and hardware partner Xi3 announced they will showcase a new “development stage computer system” this week at CES. The press release didn’t share the PC specifications, but it will be optimized for Big Picture mode and be housed in one of Xi3’s modular systems like the one shown above (most likely with a different array of ports). This chassis is roughly the size of a grapefruit and is built to mount on the back of displays.
"Today marks the beginning of a new era for Xi3," said Xi3 CEO Jason A. Sullivan in a press release. “This new development stage product will allow users to take full-advantage of their large high-definition TV displays for an amazing computer game experience. As a result, this new system could provide access to thousands of gaming titles through an integrated system that exceeds the capabilities of leading game consoles, but can fit in the palm of your hand.”

DOTA 2 Invites AHOY!

So, Valve are cool. Dota 2 is cool. And you’re probably cool too. You should play some Dota 2!!!

“Oh,” You might exclaim, “but, but, saveroomminibar, I don’t have a Dota 2 invite! How can I play Dota 2 if I don’t even own Dota 2?”

“Well,” I’ll say. “I have a handful of Dota 2 invites with YOUR NAME ON IT. Let’s go about handing them out like some late-for-work Santa Claus!”

It would be nice to give the invites to the people who really want to play Valve’s new masterpiece. If you’re just kinda interested, like the post, if you’re like “OMG I WANT DOTA 2 FFS OMG PLS” then just comment on the post, or send me an ask, and I’ll see what I can do for you. I have 5 Dota 2 Invites to spread around, so don’t worry too much about missing out if you’re super looking forward to playing…

So then, Dota 2, anyone?

Ermegerd!

Sterm Holider Serle!

December 20th - January 5th.

Steam’s “Big Picture” Mode begins it beta today. Read the full article over at Kotaku, seriously enticing stuff happening at valve… Then again, there usually is.

Here are the basics: this afternoon, when Big Picture goes live, you’ll be able to push a button and turn Steam into an entirely new interface. It sort of looks like the dashboard on an Xbox 360, minus the advertisements and other clutter that can make that system so irritating to navigate. And it allows you to do almost everything you can do on vanilla Steam: you can buy games, browse the web, and even chat with your friends using the platform’s standard in-game overlay.

The fonts, icons, and menus are all large enough to be comfortably viewed on a big-screen television, and the prompts are designed for a game controller. You can use Big Picture on your normal monitor with a mouse and keyboard, but that would defeat the purpose: this is an interface designed for your living room. Because the living room, Valve says, is where most people prefer playing video games.

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Steam Greenlight, a new platform feature that enlists the community’s help in selecting some of the next games to be released on Steam.

Steam Greenlight will allow developers and publishers to post information and media about their game in an effort to convince the Community that their game should be released on Steam. Greenlight piggybacks on Steam Workshop’s flexible system that organizes content and lets customers rate and leave feedback.

As well as serving as a clearing house for game submissions, Greenlight will provide an incredible level of added exposure for new games and an opportunity to connect directly with potential customers and fans.

“Making the call to publish or not publish a title isn’t fun,” said Anna Sweet, at Valve. “Many times opinions vary and our internal jury is hung on a decision. But with the introduction of the Steam Workshop we realized an opportunity to enlist the community’s help as we review certain titles and, hopefully, increase the volume and quality of creative submissions.”

Steam Greenlight will be released August 30.
